Tesla Targets First City for Robotaxi Launch Amid Initial Discussions
Tesla is actively considering its first city for launching a Robotaxi service, having begun preliminary discussions with local authorities, according to a recent report.
During the unveiling of its Robotaxi in October, Tesla announced plans to initiate fully autonomous ride-sharing operations in Texas and California as early as 2025. The company has already engaged with officials in one of these states.
Recent emails obtained by Bloomberg reveal that Tesla is in communication with city officials in Austin, Texas, indicating that these discussions are already underway.
Currently, Tesla is in the very early stages of planning, which means there are many details to work out before any significant progress can be made, including the timeline and specifics regarding the size and operation of the Robotaxi fleet.
This concept differs significantly from Tesla's current offerings. At present, Tesla drivers can utilize the Full Self-Driving suite to navigate in a semi-autonomous manner. Although this system doesn’t require the driver to keep their hands on the wheel, it does demand full attention, with monitoring conducted via a cabin-facing camera.
In contrast, Tesla's vision for the Robotaxi fleet is entirely different. These vehicles will operate without requiring any attention or input from passengers regarding their operation.
The Robotaxi will transport passengers from point A to point B without any human intervention, similar to services already provided by companies like Waymo.
However, those companies have typically relied on geofencing and teleoperation to ensure safety during rides.
