Removed Tesla Model 3 Part Makes a Return—For a Price

Tesla has recently announced that Model 3 owners in the United States can now reinstate a previously removed component, the turn signal stalk, for a fee of $595. This option comes after the company eliminated the stalk in favor of turn signal buttons during the Model 3 "Highland" refresh launched last year. The decision to remove the stalk was part of Tesla's broader strategy to streamline the vehicle's interior and prepare for a future of more autonomous driving features, aligning with the trend towards minimalistic design.

The introduction of turn signal buttons has received mixed feedback from drivers, many of whom preferred the traditional stalk. In response to customer demand, Tesla has made a retrofit kit available for those wishing to revert to the stalk design. This kit can be purchased through Tesla's website, but buyers must have a Model 3 linked to their Tesla account to complete the transaction.

Interestingly, while Tesla opted to remove the stalk from the Model 3, it chose to retain the traditional stalk in the newly launched Model Y, which debuted in early 2025. This decision suggests that Tesla is aware of the polarizing nature of the button system and is willing to cater to consumer preferences in different models. The contrasting approaches between the Model 3 and Model Y highlight Tesla's ongoing efforts to balance innovation with user experience, as the company navigates a competitive electric vehicle market that is rapidly evolving.
