An inventive Tesla Model Y owner has crafted what could be deemed one of the most practical do-it-yourself (DIY) accessories ever conceived for a widely-used electric car. Using resourceful DIY techniques and conventional solar panels, the owner devised a system enabling their all-electric crossover to charge directly from the sun while parked outdoors.

In a post shared on the r/TeslaLounge subreddit, the Model Y owner revealed that the development of the DIY Tesla solar array charger spanned two years. Although currently in a proof-of-concept stage, the system is already delivering a significant daily charge to the vehicle, ranging from 20 to 60 miles, contingent on its specific configuration. This represents a noteworthy amount of added charge for a vehicle merely exposed to sunlight while stationary.

The existing setup devised by the Model Y owner employs telescoping carbon fiber tubes to extend and retract the solar panels, ensuring that the entire system remains within the Model Y's maximum roof weight capacity of 165 lbs. Notably, the design prioritizes non-intrusiveness, with the solar charger neatly fitting within a single parking space even when fully deployed.

The current prototype, Beta 1, crafted from wood and carbon fiber tubes, stands at a height of 11 inches. However, a sleeker Beta 2 version, constructed entirely from carbon fiber and measuring a mere 6 inches in height, is in the development pipeline. The project's website, DartSolar.com, serves as a platform for updates on the solar charger's evolution. The Model Y owner aims for a cost target of approximately $1 per watt, ensuring affordability for the expanding solar charger.

Reception to this solar charger within the r/TeslaLounge subreddit has been notably positive, with members acknowledging its advantages and commending its straightforward approach to solar-powered electric vehicle charging. Some EV enthusiasts also pointed out that the solar array likely contributes to keeping the vehicle's cabin cool, offering an additional benefit of preserving the battery charge. To gain further insights, you can watch the Model Y owner's video detailing the solar-powered EV charging system below.
