Tesla Unveils Enhanced 320kW Superchargers in New Public Experiment

Tesla has embarked on a novel engineering experiment, boosting the output of certain Superchargers to over 320kW.

This represents a significant upgrade, as the typical maximum output for Tesla’s Superchargers has been capped at 250kW, occasionally spiking to the 260-270kW range based on temperature conditions. @TesLatino on X discovered one of the experimental locations.

Supercharger V3+

Tesla appears to be testing this enhanced capability on V3+ (labeled V3.5) Superchargers in the U.S. According to Kyle Conner from Out of Spec Studios, who specializes in EV reviews and road trips, these units are likely operating at 900 amps or more to reach the 320kW+ mark, as they do not seem to be using higher voltages than usual.

Historically, the highest observed amperage has been around 700 amps, making this a notable increase. The Cybertruck is expected to hit 330kW once 950V support is introduced to Superchargers – currently, they are functioning at approximately 390V. This voltage increment will also lower the overall current, reducing temperatures and enhancing charging speeds.

Wes Morrill, the Cybertruck's Lead Engineer, mentioned that this trial is being deployed across several states with V3 cabinets and V4 charging posts – hence the V3+ or V3.5 designations. It’s encouraging to see Tesla striving to enhance maximum charging speeds – the Cybertruck has the potential to achieve up to 340kW, indicating significant progress.

Future Charging Prospects

A key aspect of this high theoretical maximum is the Cybertruck’s dual battery pack configuration, allowing for rapid charging of both packs simultaneously – leading to quicker overall charging times, as the combined packs’ maximum charge rate exceeds that of individual packs.

Even older Tesla models from 2021 onwards can theoretically support 300kW, as their bus bars are rated for it. A 50kW increase over the previous 250kW cap would greatly improve charging times and help alleviate congestion by enabling faster vehicle charging.

We eagerly anticipate Tesla’s future advancements in charging technology – particularly the potential adoption of the dual-pack charging system in future Tesla models to achieve even faster EV charging capabilities.
