Tesla Model Y Juniper Refresh: What We Hope to See
As more images and details of the upcoming Tesla Model Y Juniper refresh circulate online, it's the perfect time to speculate on the features we can expect, along with a wishlist of upgrades that could make this model even more compelling.
Anticipated Features
Bumper Camera
The bumper camera, a feature already present on the Cybertruck and expected on the Model S and X, is likely to be included in the refreshed Model Y. This will be particularly useful for parking and navigating tight spaces, as well as for those who take their Model Ys on off-road adventures.
Enhanced Suspension
The recent Model 3 Highland introduced frequency-selective damping and softer springs, improving ride comfort. It’s reasonable to expect similar, if not superior, suspension improvements in the Juniper Model Y.
New Steering Wheel Design
In line with the Model 3, the refreshed Model Y may eliminate traditional gear stalks. There's also a possibility of a squircle steering wheel, drawing inspiration from the Cybertruck’s design.
Rear Entertainment Screen
The Model 3 Highland added an 8-inch rear screen, and it’s likely that the refreshed Model Y will include this feature as well. This screen would provide rear passengers with access to streaming services, enhancing the in-car entertainment experience.
Advanced Ambient Lighting
Leaked photos suggest that the Juniper refresh will feature upgraded ambient lighting, with illuminated strips extending onto the front doors. This will likely offer customizable brightness settings, as seen in recent software updates.
Ventilated Seating
Ventilated seats, previously a luxury in the Model S and X, are expected to be part of the Model Y Juniper refresh. This addition would enhance the vehicle's interior comfort, particularly in warmer climates.
Redesigned Rear Lightbar
A new rear lightbar, along with a return to written branding instead of the Tesla logo, has been spotted in recent leaks. This change could give the Model Y a refreshed and modern appearance.
Improved Audio System
The Model 3’s recent refresh saw its speaker count increase from 14 to 17. We’re hoping the Model Y will receive a similar upgrade, further enhancing its already impressive audio capabilities.
Wishlist for the Juniper Model Y
Increased Driving Range
With the Model 3 refresh offering improved range, we're hoping for a 10% range boost in the Model Y as well. Achieving a range of 350 miles (550 km) on a single charge for the Long-Range variant would be ideal.
Structural 4680 Battery
Tesla's 4680 battery cells could be a game-changer for the Model Y, potentially enhancing safety and reducing production costs. If these batteries make it into the refreshed model, they could set a new standard for electric vehicles.
Upgraded Performance Variant
A more powerful and efficient performance variant with better cooling, upgraded brakes, and enhanced seats would be an exciting addition to the Model Y lineup. This might take some time to develop, but it’s definitely on our radar.
Simplified Air Suspension
While air suspension is currently reserved for the Model S and X, a more affordable version for the Model Y would be a significant enhancement, especially for those seeking a premium SUV experience.
Tiltable Central Display
A tiltable central display, as seen in the Model S and X, would be a welcome addition to the Model Y. This feature would improve usability, particularly for passengers in the front seat.
Enhanced Wireless Charging Pads
Tesla’s wireless charging pads could benefit from faster and more efficient charging, possibly with integrated cooling to prevent overheating, especially with newer smartphones that support high-wattage charging.
Steam Gaming Capability
While currently available only on the Model S and X, adding Steam gaming support to the Model Y would be a fantastic feature, offering a unique entertainment option for long trips.
AI5 Hardware Integration
With AI5 hardware on the horizon, the Juniper Model Y could be one of the first vehicles to feature this advanced Full Self-Driving technology, marking a significant leap forward for Tesla.
Automated Doors
Automatic doors or handles, though typically a feature on more premium models, would be a great addition to the Model Y, enhancing convenience and adding a touch of luxury.
48V Electrical System
Tesla introduced a 48V electrical system in the Cybertruck, and the Juniper Model Y could be the first mass-market vehicle to adopt this technology, potentially offering improved efficiency and cost savings.
Faster Charging and Wireless Charging
Alongside faster Supercharging speeds, wireless charging for the Model Y could become a reality, especially with Tesla’s recent acquisition of Wiferion. This would make charging even more convenient and efficient.
Improved 7-Seat Configuration
The current 7-seat option in the Model Y is a bit cramped. We hope Tesla will re-engineer
