Tesla Expands Track Mode Functionality with Powertrain Endurance Option in Update 2024.38.4

Tesla has introduced an enhanced feature for its Track Mode V3 with software update 2024.38.4, focusing on improved powertrain management to help users maintain peak performance during extended track sessions. This new “Powertrain Endurance” option allows drivers to fine-tune cooling intensity based on their track requirements, offering more control over performance and thermal management.

Enhanced Cooling Management for Racing Conditions

In track settings, Teslas have traditionally faced challenges in sustaining high performance due to the rapid heating of components like the battery, motors, and brakes. Previously, the vehicles were tuned to provide maximum power output right away, which led to quick laps but also increased heat buildup, limiting performance over time. The new update helps address this by allowing users to balance power output with cooling, preserving performance over longer track runs.

Introducing the Powertrain Endurance Options

In the updated Track Mode V3, the Powertrain Endurance feature now provides three levels of thermal management:

Standard: The default mode, offering maximum initial power output but allowing the vehicle to quickly reach thermal limits.
Increased: Designed for a blend of power and longevity, this setting balances initial performance with extended thermal endurance.
Maximum: Prioritizes thermal management over peak power, enabling the vehicle to maintain steady performance over longer distances with less chance of thermal restrictions.

This feature is strategically placed in the Track Mode V3 menu, right between Stability Assist and Regenerative Braking settings.

Supported Vehicles and Future Updates

Currently, Powertrain Endurance is only available for the 2024 Model 3 Performance (Highland refresh), which supports Track Mode V3 and update 2024.38.4. Tesla plans to roll out this feature to additional models equipped with Track Mode V3, with Model Y Performance and Model S Plaid anticipated to follow soon.

This update, installed on approximately 2.9% of the Tesla fleet as of late October, showcases Tesla’s commitment to enhancing performance options for track enthusiasts while ensuring that vehicles remain within safe operational limits over extended sessions.
