Tesla Confirms Hardware 3 is Robotaxi-Ready

Tesla recently took center stage at the ‘We, Robot’ event in Hollywood, where a wealth of new information was revealed. A key point of interest for many has been Tesla’s plans regarding Hardware 3.

Hardware 3 vs. AI4: Pushing the Limits

Although Tesla previously hinted that AI4 and Hardware 3 would eventually diverge, the company has continued to push Hardware 3 forward with software optimizations and model updates. However, it’s becoming clear that Hardware 3 is approaching its computational limits, while AI4 has the potential for significantly greater capabilities.

Tesla’s Commitment to Hardware 3

Despite this, Tesla remains committed to supporting the millions of vehicles currently equipped with Hardware 3. Meanwhile, Tesla’s upcoming Cybercab will feature AI5, an advanced hardware platform expected to deliver enhanced computing power and performance.

Robotaxi Capabilities of Hardware 3

At the 'We, Robot' event, Lars Moravy, Tesla's Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, confirmed that Hardware 3 is fully capable of operating as a Robotaxi. This means that Hardware 3 can handle Unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD), as discussed during the event. The news was further highlighted in a video featuring YouTuber Kim Java, who interviewed both Moravy and Tesla's Chief Designer, Franz Von Holzhausen.

Tesla’s Vision for the Future

Both executives expressed confidence in Hardware 3’s capabilities, even suggesting that a HW3-equipped vehicle could operate without a steering wheel in Robotaxi mode. Tesla’s continued investment in this hardware demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that vehicles equipped with Hardware 3 remain relevant for future autonomous driving technologies.

Tesla’s Dedication to Its Customers

Though Hardware 3 may be nearing its peak, Tesla’s dedication to its customers ensures that these vehicles won’t become outdated in the near future when it comes to Robotaxi functions and Unsupervised FSD.

With this, Tesla reinforces its vision for the future and its support for existing vehicles. It will be exciting to see what comes next in their lineup.
