Mazda adopts Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS)
Japanese automaker Mazda has announced its decision to adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its upcoming lineup of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) set to launch in North America from 2025 onwards.
The move is expected to broaden charging options for Mazda customers and provide BEV drivers with access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network of over 15,000 stations in North America. Mazda's previous attempt to enter the U.S. electric vehicle market with the MX-30 faced challenges, selling only 181 units in 2021 and 324 units in 2022. The MX-30, featuring a small 35.5 kWh battery and a modest 100-mile EPA range, was discontinued in the U.S. market after the 2023 model year.
Despite the setbacks, Mazda aims to re-enter the U.S. electric vehicle market by 2025. CEO Masahiro Moro revealed plans to debut seven to eight new electric cars by 2030 but expressed caution due to uncertainties in EV demand. By adopting Tesla's charging standard, Mazda seeks to enhance the viability of its electric vehicles, making them more attractive to consumers in the competitive market.
