Tesla Now Offers Ambient Lighting Retrofit for Select Model Y Vehicles in China

Tesla has introduced an ambient lighting retrofit option for certain Model Y models in China. The complete kit, including installation, is priced at ¥1,299 (approximately $180 USD). Installation must be performed by Tesla technicians at a service center. To activate the ambient lighting feature in the vehicle's software, Tesla will enable a specific flag in the vehicle’s firmware.

Details on the Ambient Lighting Kit for the Updated Model Y in China

This ambient lighting kit, similar to the updated Model Y in China, is limited to the dashboard and does not extend to the doors. This makes it slightly different from the built-in ambient lighting available in the refreshed Model 3 Highland and Cybertruck. Additionally, it lacks the distinctive curve found in the updated Model 3's dash. Instead, the ambient lighting is positioned much lower, at the bottom edge of the dash, rather than the top edge as seen in the new Model 3.

From a software perspective, this kit includes all the same options as the Model 3 and Cybertruck, such as color choices, and will soon feature brightness control and Night Mode for ambient lighting.

The dashboard upgrade replaces the traditional wooden trim of the classic Model Y with a modern light-grey fabric trim, similar to the Model 3 Highland. However, this fabric and ambient lighting configuration is exclusively available in China.

Availability

For now, this kit is only available to Model Y vehicles in China – and only a certain subset of them. Only Model Y vehicles built between January 24, 2022, and October 01, 2023, are eligible for the retrofit.

We believe this is likely due to a hardware difference in the electrical harness. Model Y vehicles manufactured in China after October 1, 2023, come with ambient lighting pre-installed, and this kit provides the same upgrade.

It's uncertain whether this kit will be available outside of China. However, since many Model Y vehicles in Europe and Canada are produced at Giga Shanghai, they might have the necessary harness, making them eligible for the update. We'll have to wait and see if this retrofit becomes available in other markets soon.
