Tesla Enhances Actually Smart Summon, Adds Support for Sunglasses in FSD 12.5.4

Tesla has just released FSD version 12.5.4, bundled with the 2024.27.25 update, introducing improvements to its vision-based attention monitoring and Actually Smart Summon. Initially available to early-access users, the rollout has now expanded, reaching more vehicles in recent hours.

This latest version brings more than just the usual bug fixes, with notable advancements to some of Tesla’s flagship features.

Actually Smart Summon Gets Smarter

Tesla has rebranded its popular feature as Actually Smart Summon (Supervised), reflecting the continued evolution of the Summon function. Tesla’s recent post on X highlighted these changes, showcasing several new options and enhanced functionality.

Extended Range and New Sounds

The range for Actually Smart Summon has been extended by approximately 50 feet, now reaching up to 279 feet (85 meters). This expanded range comes with additional features, including new sound effects for both successful Summon completion and aborted actions.

You can now choose from several sounds for completion, such as Applause, Ta Da, Ba-dum Tiss, and Random, though there is currently no option to customize these further. The abort sound has only one selection, Emissions, proving Tesla’s engineers still enjoy a bit of humor with their ever-present fart jokes. Note that these sounds require a working Pedestrian Warning Speaker (PWS).

Feature Gaps and Future Updates

However, some features are still missing. HomeLink compatibility for Summon is not yet available, though Tesla promises it is “coming soon.” Additionally, the previously available Side Clearance option has been removed. Tesla has also kept the Continuous Press requirement for now, though a future update is expected to enable Summon usage without this.

Requirements for Actually Smart Summon

As with earlier versions, several conditions must be met before the vehicle can be summoned: all doors, the tailgate, and frunk must be closed, and the vehicle’s tire pressure must be at least 34 PSI for Model 3s. Also, Tesla app version 4.37.0 is now required, although it is currently available only for iOS, with an Android release pending.

The tire pressure requirement may present a challenge for users with aftermarket winter tires lacking TPMS sensors, as they won’t be able to use Actually Smart Summon without these sensors installed.

Vision-Based Attention Monitoring Enhancements

The second key feature in the 2024.27.25 update focuses on Vision-Based Attention Monitoring. This system allows FSD to operate without constant hands-on control by tracking the driver’s gaze to ensure they remain attentive.

Previously, the system struggled with drivers wearing sunglasses, but Tesla has now resolved this limitation. With the latest update, users can wear sunglasses without triggering the “no-nag” alerts from FSD, marking a significant improvement in user experience.

Undocumented Tweaks

An interesting undocumented change in the vision monitoring system now flags “Attention Monitoring unavailable—Detected device in hand” if it believes a driver is holding a phone. This has been observed even in cases where the driver was simply resting their head on their hand, indicating Tesla’s ongoing efforts to refine safety measures for FSD users.
