Tesla Model Y & 3 Were California’s Top-Selling Cars in Q2 by Huge Margin
Tesla Model Y and Model 3 continue to capture the hearts of consumers. The EVs were the best-selling cars in California in Q2 by a wide margin, leaving Toyota, Ford, and Honda far behind.
The California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA) released its California Auto Outlook for the second quarter of 2023. According to the data, new car registrations increased by 11.6% in the first six months of 2023 compared to the same period last year. Auto Outlook predicts the total number of vehicle registrations in the state will reach 1.8 million in 2023.
“It’s a great time to purchase a new vehicle,” says Tony Toohey, CNCDA Chairman and Owner of Auburn Toyota. “We currently have rising inventories on the horizon, and we are happy to provide information to our customers about newly released traditional and electric vehicle models from our manufacturing partners,” says Toohey.
Electric vehicles continue to increase their share, which is mainly due to Tesla. The state's BEV (battery electric vehicle) market share surpassed 21 percent in the first half of 2023. This is well above the 16.4 percent recorded for all of 2022. The second quarter of 2023 showed that Northern California residents are more likely to buy BEVs as these vehicles accounted for 25.9% of the market share, while Southern California BEV sales accounted for 20.9% of registrations.
Tesla cars again became unsurpassed leaders. They are the best-selling not only in the EV market but have long surpassed gasoline competitors. The times when Toyota, Ford and Honda cars were the top sellers in California now are just pages of history. Currently, Tesla's electric cars have an all-encompassing dominance, being greatly loved by the people of the state.
In Q2 2023, Tesla sold 74,765 Model Ys, surpassing any of its competitors by a huge margin. In second place is its older sibling Model 3 with 41,718 units. These are impressive sales figures from the Texas-based manufacturer. In third place, far behind, is Toyota Camry with 27,169 units. In fourth place is Toyota RAV4 with 26,032 sales. Closing out the top 5 is Ford F-Series with 21,288 units.
