Tesla Expanded 6-Seater Model Y L Will be Launched in China This Fall

Tesla has officially introduced the Model Y L, a new six-seater variant of its popular electric SUV, in China. This model features a longer wheelbase and an updated design, including a revised C-pillar and a spacious third-row seating arrangement. The Model Y L is set to launch this fall, as confirmed by a recent filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The Model Y L stands out with its six-seat configuration, a feature previously exclusive to the more expensive Model X. While the standard Model Y offered a seven-seat option, the third row was often too cramped for adults. The new variant aims to enhance family utility, effectively positioning itself as a compact alternative to the Model X. With a wheelbase of 3,040 mm, the Model Y L is longer than the Model X’s wheelbase of 2,965 mm, although it is slightly shorter in overall length. This design allows it to bridge the gap between the standard Model Y and the larger Model X, catering to families seeking more space without sacrificing efficiency.

In terms of performance, the Model Y L is equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system and an 82.5 kWh LFP battery pack, delivering a remarkable 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.9 seconds and a CLTC range of 688 kilometers. The vehicle also features aesthetic enhancements, including a new rear spoiler and unique badging, which contribute to its modern look. Tesla's strategic decision to launch this model in China reflects the growing demand for spacious electric SUVs in the region, particularly as competition intensifies from local manufacturers. While the initial release is focused on the Chinese market, there is speculation about its potential availability in North America and Europe in the future.
