Major Automakers, including Ford, GM, and Nissan, Embrace Tesla's North American Charging Standard
Toyota, the world's largest automaker by sales, announced on Thursday that it has entered into an agreement to adopt Tesla's electric-vehicle charging technology starting in 2025.
Joining the ranks of Ford, General Motors, and Nissan, who have already adopted Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS), Toyota's move further solidifies Tesla's superchargers as the emerging industry norm, potentially overshadowing the rival Combined Charging System (CCS).
Toyota plans to integrate NACS ports into select Toyota and Lexus EV models, including the new Toyota crossover slated for production at its Kentucky manufacturing facility.
For existing owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles equipped with CCS, an adapter will be made available for NACS charging starting in 2025.
Tesla's NACS enjoys wide availability, with the U.S. Department of Energy noting that they account for approximately 60 percent of fast chargers in the U.S.
While the rival CCS system has the support of automakers like Volkswagen, discussions with Tesla regarding NACS adoption have been underway.
