A Revitalized Tesla Model 3: How an Upgraded Battery Breathes New Life into the EV

The recent upgrade of a 470,000-mile Tesla Model S has demonstrated how older electric vehicles can be revitalized with modern technology. By replacing the original 70 kWh battery with a newer 100 kWh pack, the owner significantly enhanced the vehicle's driving range and overall performance. This upgrade, completed in just one day, showcases the potential for older models to outperform their original specifications.

Used Tesla Model S vehicles can often be found at attractive prices, sometimes around $10,000. However, the high-voltage battery's lifespan can be a concern, as a replacement from Tesla can cost approximately $20,000. Fortunately, upgrading to a larger capacity battery not only mitigates this cost but also improves the vehicle's range, making it a more appealing option for owners of older models.

The upgrade process is feasible for Tesla vehicles manufactured until 2021, prior to the discontinuation of the Rapid Mate System. The owner, Alex, successfully sourced a 100 kWh battery from a wrecked vehicle and installed it in his 2015 Model S 70D. Although the installation presented some challenges, including error messages and firmware mismatches, these issues were resolved with patience and technical know-how.

With the new battery, the Model S is expected to achieve a range exceeding 300 miles, a significant improvement over its original EPA-rated range of 240 miles. This upgrade not only enhances the vehicle's road-tripping capabilities but also exemplifies the growing trend of battery upgrades in the EV market, allowing older models to remain competitive in an evolving landscape.
