Tesla to Introduce Cybertruck Battery Armor and Rock Sliders by End of 2024

Tesla’s Cybertruck has proven itself as a robust off-road vehicle, showcased in various videos from both Tesla and enthusiastic owners tackling challenging terrains. However, there’s been a notable demand for enhanced protection to further boost its off-road performance.

Wes Morril, the Program Manager for the Cybertruck, has confirmed that Tesla will soon offer Battery Armor and Rock Sliders as retrofit options, expected to be available by the end of 2024.

Battery Armor

While the Cybertruck's underbody already has some level of protection, it’s not as robust as some off-road enthusiasts would like. The upcoming Battery Armor aims to address this by offering additional shielding to protect the battery, particularly against high-center impacts or sharp rocks. This new feature will be akin to the aftermarket armor provided by other companies that specialize in off-road enhancements.

In contrast, Rivian offers a comprehensive armor package priced at $3,950 USD or $5,800 CAD, which includes a 20” wheel upgrade, a full-size spare, and a utility panel with an air compressor and sufficient hose for tire adjustments. Tesla’s Battery Armor will be available as a retrofit option, allowing it to be added to existing vehicles, unlike Rivian’s which is only available with the initial purchase.

Rock Sliders

The Cybertruck’s sleek underbody design, while visually appealing, leaves the plastic trim vulnerable to damage. Rock sliders, typically installed along the lower edge of off-road vehicles, protect the body from rock impacts. Although some third-party companies have started offering rock sliders for the Cybertruck, having an OEM option from Tesla ensures better integration and ease of use.

Third-party rock sliders often attach to lift points on the vehicle, complicating tire replacements or vehicle lifting without removing these additions. Tesla’s official rock sliders will avoid these issues, providing a more convenient solution.

Release Date

Tesla enthusiasts can anticipate these new options to hit the Tesla store within the next few months. According to Wes Morril, the Battery Armor and Rock Sliders will be available as retrofit options before the end of 2024, alongside the Winter Tire Package set to launch next month. Cybertruck owners can already place orders for the Winter Tire Package.
