Tesla Launches ‘Actually Smart Summon’: New Features and Updates [Now Available for HW3]

Tesla has just rolled out a major update, introducing FSD v12.5.3 with the new 'Actually Smart Summon' feature. This update, version 2024.27.20, marks the debut of a long-awaited feature—one that’s not only innovative but also expands Tesla’s capabilities.

Introduction of Actually Smart Summon

The newly released feature is exclusive to vehicles with hardware 4 (AI4) for now. This is the first instance where any type of Summon is accessible on vehicles lacking ultrasonic sensors. After removing these sensors from the Model 3 and Model Y in October 2022, Tesla also had to pull features like Summon (both standard and smart), Autopark, and Park Assist.

Tesla has since redesigned the software for these features to rely solely on visual data instead of ultrasonic sensors. While Park Assist returned in March 2023 with enhanced high-fidelity capabilities, Autopark made its comeback in March 2024. Now, Smart Summon has arrived, showcasing Tesla’s dedication to improving its autonomous driving suite.

Rollout and Availability

The initial rollout of FSD v12.5.3 and Actually Smart Summon is targeted at early-access users, which mainly include notable influencers. Currently, this update is limited to AI4-equipped vehicles, and there’s no specific timeline for when it will be available for HW3 models. Historical patterns suggest that after FSD 12.5 was initially rolled out to HW4 vehicles, it took about a month for it to reach HW3 models. Given that the adaptation work is largely complete, we anticipate a relatively short delay for HW3 availability.

As is standard with Tesla updates, FSD 12.5.3 will be released incrementally. The rollout of FSD 12.5.1.5 was halted, likely to make way for this new version. Stay tuned to our rollout pages for updates on when FSD 12.5.3 will be accessible to a broader audience.

New Features of Actually Smart Summon

The Actually Smart Summon introduces several significant upgrades from its predecessor. Utilizing the latest FSD model in version 12 and employing end-to-end AI, it marks a leap forward from the previous hand-coded systems used to control the vehicles.

A notable addition is the live camera feed available in the app. Upon accessing the Summon feature, users can view a matrix of four live camera feeds from their vehicle, enhancing situational awareness.

With the updated Summon, users have two primary options. The “Dumb Summon” allows basic forward or backward movement, while the new Smart Summon enables the vehicle to navigate to your current location or a chosen spot on the map.

To operate Smart Summon, users need to hold the “Come to Me” or “Go to Target” buttons. Releasing the button will halt the vehicle, providing control over its movements and ensuring it can stop if an obstacle is detected.

Upcoming Enhancements

Tesla has indicated that future updates will further enhance Smart Summon. Planned improvements include HomeLink and MyQ garage door support, enabling the vehicle to open a garage door before it starts moving. While this functionality was available in the prior Summon version, its performance was insufficient for reliable use. Actually Smart Summon promises to be a significant upgrade, though its trustworthiness for garage door operations remains to be fully tested.

Further enhancements will include eliminating the need to hold down buttons in the app and extending the operational range. The current version of Summon is restricted to approximately 65 meters (213 feet), with expectations for a longer range in future updates.

Eligibility and Global Rollout

Actually Smart Summon is currently available to users with the latest FSD update (2024.27.20) and is expected to reach additional customers with HW4 and FSD in North America soon. It will also become available to HW3 models in the near future.

Internationally, Actually Smart Summon will be introduced to customers with Enhanced Autopilot or FSD following the stabilization of FSD 12.5.3. As with previous feature rollouts, North America will see the initial release, followed by a gradual introduction to other regions. For instance, Autopark first appeared in North America in March 2024 before extending to Europe by late June.

Robotaxi Event

This past weekend, Tesla announced its upcoming Robotaxi event, set to take place at a city-like movie studio. The event will showcase the Robotaxi in action, potentially offering test rides. Additional data collection at the studio is underway to enhance Robotaxi performance. The timing of Actually Smart Summon’s release could align with the Robotaxi event, providing an early glimpse into its capabilities.
